Imagine this...

You are getting ready to host thanksgiving dinner and are getting the final details ready. You get dressed and adjust the strap of you shirt after it fell down and your hand lightly brushes over a bump in your right breast. As you start pushing and prodding you discover that it is about the size of a ping pong ball just moving around under your skin. You put your game face on as to not worry anyone and then you wait the longest 5 days of your life to get into the doctor.

Flash forward a few weeks...You are scheduled for the first available surgery because you want this thing OUT. It is scheduled December 22. You joke with some nurses about all the enhancement procedures you want to have done as you are "already going to be under". They laugh and you laugh and you fall off to surgery dreamland.

You wake up to hear the 3 words that nobody wants to hear. You pinch yourself. You wonder why. You think, "but they said it was unlikely because I'm only 30!!" You wonder about your children. You worry you will die. You fear the unknown. You cry a little. Your curse a little.

And then.....You dust off from the hit you just took and you think... I WILL do this. I WILL live. I WILL make a difference. I WILL have humor. I WILL  do what it takes to finish this treatment. I WILL do this for my children. I WILL pray more. I WILL love more. I WILL be grateful for the day I have been given.

That is why I am here. That is why I run. That is why I choose this race!

The DONNA Foundation is a private non-profit organization in Northeast Florida producing the only marathon in the U.S. dedicated to breast cancer research, awareness and care.  Its mission is to passionately raise funds for ground breaking breast cancer research and women living with breast cancer.

Since its launch in 2003, The DONNA Foundation has raised more than $4 million towards its vision to finish breast cancer.

The DONNA Foundation provides financial assistance for the critical needs of women and men living with breast cancer. To date, The DONNA Foundation has served more than 10,000 families. The DONNA Foundation also helped to develop and maintain the Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer Translational Genomics Program. Ongoing funding from the foundation make it possible for the laboratory team not only to conduct state of the art breast cancer research, including the widely publicized Triple Negative Breast Cancer Vaccine Trials, but also provide genomics support for studies in all cancers.
